Symptoms: Common vs Normal

As a society, we've been conditioned to sweep common symptoms under the rug as normal. Symptoms can be common, they are not normal for a healthy body. They are warning signs from your body, telling you something is wrong and it needs to be changed or fixed. Don't mistake common with normal and we need to stop normalizing being in pain.

Here's some COMMON symptoms that can be precursors to something much bigger if left to become a chronic issue.

Both can be a symptom of leaky gut, which, left untreated to become a chronic issue, commonly leads to a myriad of autoimmune issues (Celiac, IBS, asthma, arthritis, acne, obesity, lupus, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and many, many more).

Either can be a symptom of external irritation, or food sensitivities. In a functional medicine practice this would be assessed through a food sensitivities panel.

Memory Loss

While talked up to be a "normal" part of aging is often a symptom of lifelong: chronic inflammation from exposure to toxins (environmental and manufactured), leaky gut, chronic stress, poor sleep, poor diet and more.

Fatigue is the symptom, not the diagnosis. Feeling chronically tired, moody and weak is your body's alarms going off like crazy! It's telling you to slow down, it needs to heal and, most likely, diet changes need to be made. The connection between fatigue and gut health in recent findings is huge.

Another alarm from your body telling you to slow down and heal. Depression can be a symptom of gut imbalances, hormone imbalances, lack of sleep, toxin exposure, childhood trauma, and more.

And the list goes on! The point that we see here is while the initial symptom is something most of us have experienced, or know someone who has experienced it, it's not normal of a healthy body. Most importantly, there's ways to reverse some, if not all, the damage so you can live your optimal life, without pain. It takes a functional medicine practitioner to look at the whole person to determine underlying root causes to get to the source, to know how to treat, and teach you how to maintain the improvement so you stay healthy.
